What is a forward deployed engineer?

And what "AI Operations Engineering" means for a small business.

Short answer: a forward deployed engineer (FDE) works inside the real day-to-day of a business. They learn how the work really gets done. Only then do they decide what software or AI should do.

Most AI sales pitches start with a tool. The FDE way starts with how you work.

Where the name comes from

The company Palantir made the role well known. Business Insider says Palantir "would embed engineers directly with customers to build software tailored to their needs." Business Insider also reported that by April 2026, Indeed job posts for the role "had surged to 5,230% above January 2025 levels." Anthropic, OpenAI, Palantir and Stripe were among the companies hiring.

In our view, big companies have mostly had these engineers. Small businesses rarely get one.

At Runverra, we call the small-business version AI Operations Engineering. It's the same method, sized for a business with a few people and a few tools.

The method in four steps

  1. Map the whole job. Not just "sending invoices." Map everything from when a request comes in to when it's done. Include who works on it and where it sits waiting.
  2. Sort every step. Each step goes in one of four bins: delete it, use simple rules, use an AI agent, or keep a person's OK.
  3. Build inside the tools you already use, when that makes sense. Don't add yet another app.
  4. Measure before and after. Then you can see if a change worked.

What this looks like for a small business

  • A trades or home-services company: question → quote → follow-up.
  • A bookkeeping or services firm: client papers → checklist → reminders.
  • An online shop: problem orders → replies to customers → refunds list.

These show kinds of jobs. They're not client stories.

Safety comes first

  • Anything with money, customers, or steps that are hard to undo keeps a person's OK.

Access only by platform invite to our own account, at the lowest role covering this scope, or, if delegation is impossible and Matt approves, by 1Password share filled by autofill/human operator; the AI agent never sees the value.

Clients never send passwords, keys, tokens or 2FA codes in chat, email, GitHub or documents. Any credential sent anyway is not used; the client is asked to change it; the event (not the secret) is logged.

  • When the job ends, access is removed.
  • Sometimes the right answer is "don't automate this yet." We'll say so.

How to start

  • Workflow Snapshot: one workflow. You fill in a written form. We don't need to get into any tools. USD 149 (USD 145 on Fiverr). Delivery in up to 7 days after we have everything we need from you.
  • Workflow Audit: one workflow (up to 25 steps). A form, plus one call of up to 60 minutes. A read-only invite to up to 3 tools, if needed. USD 495. Delivery in up to 14 days after we have everything we need from you. If you reschedule the Audit session, the delivery date moves by the same number of days.

We don't promise savings. You get estimates, and we tell you what they're based on.

Before launch, both the Snapshot and the Audit passed blind practice runs on fictional businesses, graded by a separate internal reviewer. These were tests, not client jobs, and they are not a promise of results.
